Eyelid surgery
The eyelid surgery is surgery that removes the loose and excess skin of the upper eyelids and the bags in the lower eyelids. The bags of the lower eyelids are a combination of excess skin and fat prolapse . This can make the eyes look old , tired or “ swollen “. Older people usually have extra wrinkled skin , while younger people tend to have more wrinkle-free fat .
The operation in brief
The eyelid of the upper eyelid , is performed by a cut in the crease of the eyelid, usually under local anesthesia. From there the unwanted extra skin and any excess fat is removed. On the lower eyelid, the incision is just below the lashes or inside the eyelid. This will depend on the relationship between fat and skin. That is, if there is mainly fat and not excess skin, the fat is removed internally without an incision in the skin. In this case, in addition to local anesthesia and intoxication, or, depending on the patient’s physical condition and history, even general anesthesia is needed.
At the end of the operation we place special adhesive gauze that protect from swelling and bruising for two 24 hours. The sutures are removed in 5 days.
Sections
Eyelid surgery is done with incisions in natural aspects . These incisions in the eyelids heal extremely well and are not visible . The use of eye shadow and mascara , makes it easier to hide the scars , in the first days after surgery . Although a little pink at first , they quickly fade to white . Most patients develop very good quality scars over time .
Drugs / Smoking
Eyelid surgery requires , like any surgery , proper preparation . A complete medical history , should be taken before any surgery .
If you are a smoker , try to quit smoking for 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after surgery . Alternatively , you can reduce the number of cigarettes to 5 per day , as this can reduce the chances of complications (eczema, edema, incomplete healing) .
It would be helpful at the first appointment to have a list of the prescription medications you are taking . These may need to be stopped or changed for a few days. We also stop any homeopathic or herbal preparation as well as aspirin for 10 days before surgery and anti-inflammatory for 3 days before surgery .
