How does the new Hair Removal Laser work?
Laser hair removal is a remarkable new treatment that destroys hair follicles with a beam of monochromatic light (laser). This laser from the Alexandrite mineral, produces a high energy ray, which passes safely through normal skin. The light is then absorbed by the follicle (and especially by the melanin it contains) and part of it is converted into heat, destroying the follicle. The wavelength of the laser beam 785nm, is perfectly suitable for absorption by the melanin of the hair follicle. Slightly dark or white skin absorbs very little of the light energy and is not damaged by the laser.
Does Laser Treatment Hurt?
Laser hair removal is almost painless. Depending on the area, the hair needs to be cut, so that there is no length in the hair that will absorb energy from the laser beam. The treatment feels like a sting. A special coolant is used immediately before and after the application of the laser beam (CDC method), to minimize the pain. Anesthetic cream can be used for irritation if you prefer.
How many treatments will it take to see results?
Laser hair removal on the face, armpits and bikini requires about 5-8 treatments every 4-6 weeks. For all other areas, treatments may be longer and longer (eg every 2 months).
Are there any problems after the treatment?
Applying ice for 20 minutes for the next 3 hours after treatment minimizes redness and swelling that may occur. Laser hair removal leaves the hair burned and depending on the area, the hair falls out in the following days.
What hairs are treated with GentleLase?
Waxing with GentleLase treats black hair on white skin better. Unwanted hair growth on any area of the body can be treated. The GentleLase laser can also be used on patients with dark skin, but more treatments will be needed.
What causes abnormal hair growth?
Abnormal hair growth can be caused by heredity, irregular hormone levels and certain medications. There are other rare causes of abnormal hair growth that are not the purpose of this text. You may need treatment with hormonal drugs (contraceptives) in certain cases.
